LIVE ESTIMATED SIMULATION

Every Human Who Ever Lived

An evolving estimate of all humans ever born, how many are living now, and how many have died. The counters advance continuously using demographic rate assumptions.

Historical & future year explorer

Enter a year to estimate the number of humans alive, ever born, and deceased by that point in history. BC and AD use historical numbering (there is no year zero).

Viewing the current simulated year.

Supported: 50,000 BC through AD 50,000. Estimates before modern censuses and all future scenarios have considerable uncertainty. The year selection shows the start of that year.

☢ Catastrophic Events Simulator

What if a major disaster changed the course of human history? Choose a scenario and year, then compare the resulting population against the original timeline. These are fictional what-if assumptions, not forecasts.

No catastrophe active. Select a scenario and click Run.
BaselineCatastrophe scenario

Losses are applied at the start of the event year; annual mortality and birth reductions apply during the aftermath and fade during recovery. The model tracks cumulative births and deaths without counting the same death twice. After the event, births and ordinary deaths are approximated from the surviving population. Only AD 2026 and later are supported for catastrophe scenarios.

How the estimates work

The present-day reference is approximately 118 billion ever born and 8.3 billion alive on 15 October 2026. Historical population is interpolated between broad demographic milestones. Cumulative births are estimated by applying approximate historical birth rates and calibrating the cumulative total to the 2026 reference. The dead are calculated as ever born minus alive.

For years after 2026, the explorer uses an illustrative scenario: population gradually approaches about 10.3 billion around 2085, then declines slowly toward about 8 billion by 2300 and stays approximately stable thereafter. Births and deaths continue in the scenario. This is not an official UN forecast, especially for centuries or millennia ahead.
